Bought the LG420 phone, and received the HTC HD7 Windows Phone as a gift. Can i use Tracfone prepaid cards with the Windows HD7 phone?

A few weeks after i purchased the LG420 phone, I received the HTC HD7 Windows Phone as a gift.



I prefer using prepaid cards as opposed to a monthly plan as I work from home and don't use the cell often.

I am wondering if I can use Tracfone prepaid cards (or any other prepaid cards) with the Windows HD7 phone?

I know very little about SIM cards, but read that they are usually 'locked' on Tracfones. Might you know if the SIM card that comes with the LG420 can be unlocked and used with the HD7 Windows phone? If so, would much appreciate instructions on how to do so.

That looks like a really nice gift!

Unfortunately, I don't think you can use the phone with the Tracfone plan, but you have some other options.

The phone appears to be available both as a GSM phone and a CDMA phone. Assuming you have the GSM version (where you put in a SIM card) you may be able to use it with an AT&T or T-Mobile plan.

In particular, T-Mobile offers a SIM card kit.

You may want to actually go into a T-Mobile shop to make sure it will work. The reason I mention T-Mobile first is that they actually offer the HTC HD7 (as well as the HD2). T-Mobile says that you need to get a web plan to be able to use the web features of the phone.

The least expensive T-Mobile no-contract monthly plan that includes web access is their 1500 plan which costs $30/month plan. You get any combination of 1500 voice minutes or messages plus 30 MB data which is described as being for email and light web surfing.

AT&T also sells Windows 7 phones though not the HD7. You can try combining one of their prepaid plans with a data package. For example you could get the AT&T $2 a day (on the days you use it) prepaid plan and combine it with their $19.99 per month Data Feature package which gives you 100 MB per month for web acess and email.

Either way, I hope you find a way to fully appreciate a very nice gift.

Update 1: You can now at least use a Net10 or Straight Talk SIM card with your unlocked Windows phone. You do need the unlimited plan, however.

Update 2: You can use unlocked or T-Mobile compatible phones with the Ptel plan using their SIM card.
