Samsung Slider phone = Nightmare in Bethel, OK!

by Darlina
(Bethel, OK)

My husband and I recently purchased the new Samsung slider phone. We wanted to upgrade. We called customer service (barely scraping by on understanding what they were saying) and everything went smoothly as to switching numbers and minutes and everything seemed fine and dandy. Until we tried to call and text. We had no service anywhere.

We called Net10 back, and after trying to translate what they were saying, it turns out that since this new phone doesn't have a SIM card, the AT&T tower that is around here is preventing us from having service. I could sit in my living room and have full bars with the Motorola I had before. Now I have to drive almost fifty miles to get service. Because the Samsung is all digital and has no SIM card, it may take up to six months to fix! SIX MONTHS??? Ugh!

We have decided to take these phones back and get another phone that comes with a SIM card. My advice? Don't get this Samsung Slider unless you live in a big city. Otherwise you will NOT have service.

Which Bethel?
by: Anonymous

There are two Bethel's in Oklahoma. Pine Cellular is in SE Oklahoma only. There is a small town called Bethel in the mountains close to Broken Bow. There is also a larger Bethel near Shawnee, which is most likely the one this thread is about. Pine would not be local for the Shawnee area.

I have tried to Always buy Samsung products, in particular their cell-phones and TV's. Normally Net10 has pretty basic phones, so the fact that they pulled such a great deal with this Samsung model is incredible. Normally, when you pay so little for a service, you expect the phone to be sub-par (like metro-PCS when they first came out). But I just got the phone and it works great. The big screen is a HUGE plus and it makes it feel like my older Samsung that i paid $320 for off of ebay. Only thing is, this one was WAY cheaper and I don't need to sign a contract to get a brand new one.

Coverage in Bethel, OK
by: admin

Hi Darlina,

Ouch. There's nothing worse than getting excited about upgrading and then finding things don't work.

However, I don't think the AT&T tower is preventing you from getting a signal. The Net10 slider phones now available in Bethel, OK are CDMA phones like the LG 290C and run on Verizon's network, so they can't use the AT&T tower. Your motorola phones were on AT&T's network.

I checked the coverages of both Verizon and AT&T in your area and found that neither had good coverage. You can see these maps here:

AT&T Prepaid Coverage

AT&T Regular Voice Coverage

Verizon Prepaid Coverage

Verizon Digital Coverage

As you can see, coverage is spotty all around, but if things were working with the Motorola phones, I would go back to them.

In case you're interested, I looked to see if there were any local cell phone companies that serviced Bethel, OK area and found:

Pine Cellular (www.pinecellular.com)
210 North Park Drive
Broken Bow, Oklahoma
Phone: 580-584-3330

They claim to offer prepaid service though it sounds more like a no-contract plan. Anyway, you might want to check them out.

Thanks for your comments and good luck.
