Grandfathered Free-Up Plan

by Mike
(Midland, PA)

I am fortunate to have the older Free-Up pre-paid plan. I've had this plan for more than 10 years and I am very satisfied with it. I don't pay any access fees, but the per minute rate is kind of high. I have to add minutes at least every 90 days (used to be 60 days)with a $30.00 minimum to keep the plan going. National long distance is free and weekends and holidays are free. I pay 0.35 cents per minute and 0.70 cents per minute when in roaming.

Coverage is very good and I rarely have any dropped calls or no service. My only minor gripe is that my plan won't allow me to do anything with pictures that I take with my phone. They can't be emailed or uploaded to a computer. I believe there is some kind of cable available that would allow me to do send pics to a PC, but I'm really not motivated enough to buy one.

------------
Edit: If you know someone who actually is a grandfather, you might show them the Jitterbug phones which also use Verizon's network.

Grandfathered Verizon Re-UP
by: Eunice

I've had trouble today for the first time in re-upping my account which I have had for about 15 years. Has anyone else had similar problems renewing their account? Is there anyway to talk to a live Verizon agent?

Pry out of my cold, dead hands
by: Evilene

I have the grandfathered FreeUp plan (since 2003) and I will never let it go. I don't make a lot of calls and currently have a few hundred banked. Since I can get one year service for $100, I plan on holding onto this forever.

I also have a Tracfone for internet access and videos.
If you make a lot of calls or text they may not work for you, but if you only use for internet and video, with the free Wi-Fi all over, it's a pretty good deal too.

Free-up phone plans
by: Anonymous

I too was fortunate to purchase a Verizon free-up plan over 15 years ago. I have never had a problem purchasing a cell phone at Wal Mart or Target and activating it onto my Free-up plan until today, March 19, 2015. The Verizon people said none of their basic phones would activate unless I purchase a $35/mo plan or another plan costing more than my free-up plan.

I am on limited income and I do not make frequent phone calls. Their reason was that I originally purchased the plan on a "Alltel" plan and that this was not compatible with their new Verizon plans. One honest Verizon representative said Verizon's goal is to convert all their non-contract plans to more expensive plans. I view this as bad customer service.

Most of the Verizon representatives are not knowledgeble about past practices and are coached into signing up customers to more expensive plans.

Maybe hopefully I can reach the age and hang on to my very old "Alltell" phone until I reach senior citizen ages and perhaps find a suitable discount.

Has anyone encounter any problems like this and is willing to suggest the name of an "Alltel" phone that is compatible with the Free-up plan?"

free-up/ you can text & get new phone
by: Anonymous

I have the free-up plan. If you want a new phone, just go to best buy and get a verizon pre-pay phone and don't activate it. I got a samsung flip phone to replace my old kyocera. Also, if you access your account online, like I do, you can activate text messaging for .10 a text. You can switch your phone over online as well. There are instructions via your account on how to do it.

I have one of those too ... with an equally old phone. Want to transfer to new phone, want to use text messaging without losing the plan, anyone know if that is possible?
