I would like to assign a silent ringtone to one of my contacts and cannot find one. Any ideas? My library phones me when a requested book comes in, but I don't want to hear the phone ring. Picky, I know. :)
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Always glad to help a reader. However, I'm not sure whether you're having trouble finding a silent ringtone or having trouble assigning the silent ringtone to a contact, so I'll try to answer both questions.
Assigning a Ringtone to a Contact
Menu -> Contacts -> Names, select your contact, click Options and scroll down to select Edit.
Then again go to
Options -> Add Detail -> Ringtone.
Scroll down to Ringtone, select Change and then choose a ringtone from either your Ringtone, Voice Recordings, or Default Sounds directory.
Making a Silent Ringtone
The quickest way to make an almost silent ringtone is to use your phones voice recorder and record a few seconds of silence. Then you can assign the voice recording as the ringtone for your contact. This recording isn't completely silent because pressing the Stop recording button creates a slight noise at the end.
Another way to create a silent ringtone is to use your computer's sound recorder and again record a few seconds of silence. On a Windows computer, the recording produces a .wma file. You can convert it to an mp3 file by uploading it to the media.io website and download an mp3 version of the silent sound file. Then you have to transfer the silent ringtone from your computer to your phone via Bluetooth file transfer, data cable or MMS message from your email. That last method does cost the airtime used to send the message.
I used that method (before I realized I could use the voice recorder) to create a Silent MP3 file that you should be able to download (on Windows, right-click on the link and select Save Link As) to save you the first half of the process.
Hope this helps.
