Q: Is there a credit check?
A: Yes, though it's a no-contract plan, they may do a credit check. The check is performed on the day you order and will show up in your credit report a couple of days later.
In this case, as you can see, the credit inquiry was performed with the Equifax agency.
The reason for the credit check is probably because you have the option of getting a traditional paper bill, which you can pay by check, credit card, etc. The phone company wants to know if you will pay your bills on time.
This is also probably the reason that they charge an activation fee of $35 (update: no activation fees anymore) as they have to pay the credit agencies to check your credit.
