Camera trouble

by Susan

I took a photo with my phone at resolution of 960 x 1280. I pressed send and got the message "Selected content is oversized", and it won't allow me to send it. It was taken vertically and is 394KB in size. Then I took another photo at the same resolution, but it is 164KB in size, and goes on to the next step to send it. It was taken horizontally, if that makes a difference.

I don't understand why there is such a difference in file size, since they were both taken with the LG 290C at the same resolution and the same quality, (fine)? Plus, why can you take one photograph that has a larger file size; (same resolution/quality), but you are not allowed you to send it to anyone, whereas the one at the same resolution/quality, but is a smaller file size, you are allowed to send?

Also, is there a way to transfer photos to your PC without having to send them via phone or email, so you can review them before sending them?

Upload high rez to PC

If you can't upload a high resolution with the finest setting without having to reduce it's size via bluetooth, what's the point of having a 1.3 megapixel phone/camera in the first place. That's absurd!

There are several other problems with this camera as well. One big one that I see is where the camera lens is located. It's on the upper left back and is unprotected if it's gets dropped and the lens hits something. Also, it's really easy to get finger prints on it or accidentally get your finger in the way of the photo, ruining it completely. Who wants a photo taken through a smudged lens? It would have been nice if they had put a small mirror on it so you could see yourself when you want to take a photo, rather than trying to guess where your face will end up.

Another thing about it is that it is top heavy if you are trying to hold it one handed to text or dial in a phone number to call. It could be dropped due to that. I was trying to find a camera phone with the megapixel, rather than the lower resolution of a VGA, but I don't think this one is the answer. I currently own the Samsung T301G and like all the features of it, aside from the smaller camera resolution. A big plus to the T301G is the timer. I use it all every day for many different things.

Thanks for listening,

A few answers

Thanks for your detailed questions. I can answer a couple of them now, but it'll probably take a day or two before I have time to give a full answers.

The file size of the photo depends on what it being photographed. While the camera has a resolution of 1280 x 960 which works out to 1.3 megapixels, the image gets processed and stored as a .jpg file which compresses as much info as possible. It you took a photo of something without much detail and variation then the photo can usually be compressed down to a smaller size. When you take a photo of something with a lot of detail, the file size tends to be bigger.

How you hold the camera shouldn't really matter although it does affect the composition of the photo. So perhaps if a photo included more or less of a clear blue sky depending on the way you held the camera then maybe it would tend to be a little smaller.

I'll have to look a little more into your question about sending a large photo via text. For now, let me guess that there is a file size limit for sending picture messages.

As a comparison, on the Samsung T401g, which also has a 1.3 MP camera. You can download the full resolution photo via Bluetooth, but if you try and send it via picture message, the phone sends a reduced resolution picture instead.

The problem with the LG290C is that I haven't found a way to download the pictures via Bluetooth. I can't yet believe there's no way of getting the pictures since that would seem to defeat the purpose of having a 1.3 megapixel camera on the phone.

Hope this helps a little bit. I'll try to get a better answer soon.
